How much do the programs cost?
The cost of our medical weight loss programs varies depending on the weight loss strategies used. Fees will also vary based on insurance coverage and necessary diagnostic testing. Weight loss medications and meal replacement products are not included in program cost.
Will my insurance cover the program?
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires ALL insurance companies to cover Obesity as a preventative health benefit. Currently in Hawaii, HMSA covers our programs very well. For other insurers, you can call and ask, “Where can I use my obesity benefit to see a MEDICAL DOCTOR to help me lose weight?” If your insurance company does not cover Island Health Weight & Wellness’s programs, you may qualify for our cash pay discount program called “Jump Start!”
Which insurance plans are currently providing coverage?
Insurance policies constantly change, so it is difficult to say which providers offer coverage for our programs. The following list may change at any time, but these plans have provided coverage for our plans in the past.We will be happy to look more thoroughly into your insurance coverage for you at your free consultation and give you more exact costs.
Insurance providers we’ve worked with in the past include:
- HMSA PPO
- HMSA HMO
- HMSA Akamai Advantage
- Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield
It is important to note that benefit quotes are NOT a guarantee of coverage!
Will you file my insurance for me?
If it is confirmed your insurance company is providing coverage for our weight loss programs, we will file the insurance claim. In this case, you remain responsible for all deductibles, copays and other extraneous amounts not covered by your policy.
I only need to lose 20 lbs. Can I still be on one of your programs?
Yes! If your BMI is between 22-27 and you are within a normal weight range but want guidance on how to lose a few more pounds, Island Health Weight & Wellness can help.
Use our BMI calculator to learn what your Body Mass Index is.
I am a diabetic and have high blood pressure. Can I be on one of your programs?
Medical weight loss programs are often successful at improving health conditions such as type-2 diabetes and hypertension. The Optifast program was originally created for patients who were hospitalized with diabetes. It is very safe for you to use in conjunction with your medications. We will discuss any specific medication issues at your free consultation.
How fast will I lose my excess weight?
The average weight loss on our programs is 2 – 7 lbs per week. However there are many factors that determine how fast you will lose weight.
Rate of weight loss is dependent upon:
- Which program you choose
- How well you adhere to your program
- How much weight you have to lose at the start
How fast you will lose weight can be impacted by which weight loss program you are on (i.e. OPTIFAST© vs. Calorie Counting). Optifast is designed for very rapid weight loss to alleviate medical conditions immediately. The Calorie Counting Program is designed to help patients lose weight while learning new eating habits and making lifestyle changes over a longer period of time. Your close adherence to the individualized program you develop with the provider is a key factor.
Do you have a maintenance program?
Long-term maintenance is a fundamental component of the medical weight loss program. Following your initial weight loss program you will be given ongoing support from our weight loss team and will have access to the same tools that helped you lose weight so you can keep it off.
